The answer to this question is both No and Yes! Well, before we get the answer of can you cry underwater, let’s know why we cry?
Why we cry?
Crying is more than a sign of sadness. All kinds of feelings we feel ranging from grief, anger, and empathy to surprise can cause us crying. Dropping tears is one way of telling others what we are feeling inside. So, emotions are a part of the crying process. Influenced tears or unexpected tears come out of your eyes when they react to the chemicals emitted by certain substances like toxic chemicals and onion skins.

Most of the time, intense emotions are followed by heavy breathing which causes crying. If you do heavy breathing underwater, your mouth and eventually your lungs will be flooded with water. As there’s no way that you can do heavy breathing underwater.
The body mechanism for crying underwater works just as fine above as below the water. Firstly, Your tear ducts in your eyes won’t release tears underwater because the density and pressure of the water won’t let them come out. So if you were to actually cry underwater, you can swallow a large amount of water in your lung and you will drown. After some time, you will get yourself dead.
Besides, if you manage to satisfy all the conditions above, still if you cry, your tears will be wiped off. And will invisible in water as you’re underwater and your tear also mostly water which would just be mixed with the rest of the water.
What’s the solution of it?
The answer to Can you cry underwater is Yes in this condition –
Yes, you will be able to start crying underwater. But pretty soon, you have to breathe because you have to inhale the amount of air that you had breathed out when you started crying.
Here the solution is – If you are wearing scuba gear, you will be able to do heavy breathing. Or, if they have a snorkel or other breathing equipment you can continue to cry. If no breathing is possible, you will not be able to inhale during the course of crying and then you will need to stop, or you could drown by inhaling water.

What is the science of crying?
Where humans drop tears as of the emotions that they are experiencing, other creatures on Earth shed tears because of irritation or pain. Do you know who gets the most benefit of crying? Guess?? The answer is – All babies in the world 😆 Though it’s funny but serious too! They produce tears to attract attention from their mothers.
No matter when and where you’re crying underwater, for as long as you can completely control your breathing cycle, you will not drown and can continue crying. But as you can see, controlling your breathing when crying is next to impossible. So, wait until you get off the water before you continue crying. 😆 😆 😆 😆
Can you as well as we cry in SPACE?
You can cry in space, however, gravity won’t allow your tears to drop downwards. Instead, your tears will stick to your eyes and form a liquid ball. After that, soon they will float around sticking with your eyes.
