Hello Gnees Army,
Good Evening,
As of August 2013, Guinness World Records stated that Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper® is officially the world’s hottest chile pepper. Originally named the “HP22BNH7”, produced by cultivator Ed Currie, who runs PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
He plants this hottest pepper variety by crossing a Pakistani Naga with a Red Habanero type from St Vincents Island in the West Indies. As it was developed in South Carolina, it named with Carolina. However, today we will know how it becomes the hottest pepper in the world, how it tastes, how it looks, hospital incident with it, and many more. So, Here we go…
How did the story begin?
The cultivator and developers of Carolina Reaper Ed Currie started growing peppers because of his having an interest in the health benefits of hot peppers, especially in fighting diseases. His family had a history of cancer and so preventive steps were required as soon as possible. After that, he began researching communities with low levels of disease.
After his couple of months of research, he found that there was something common among some communities that he was searching for. And yes it is a hot pepper that was the main diet of these communities. This incident sparked his passion that’s led to something pretty special and thus he contributes hugely not only to his family but also to society. Sometimes, he also donated his chili peppers for cancer research.
How to identify this hottest pepper?
The Carolina Reaper is a kind of a smaller pod. It is 1 to 2 inches (2.5 – 5 cm) wide and 2 to 3 inches (5 – 7.6 cm) long. When the pods get matured, it converted into a Gorgeous red color. Usually, the skin of Carolina reaper feels like a bumpy texture, though some other species can have a smoother texture. The tip of this hottest pepper is called the ‘scorpion tail’, that looks like the sting of a wasp.

How hot the Carolina Reaper is?
As the hottest pepper in the world in 2020, the heat range of Carolina Reaper is marked from 1,400,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units) up to the blazing 2,200,000 SHU on the Scoville Scale. It broke the two former world record holders, the ghost pepper and a Red Savina Habanero. It is, to date, the world’s hottest hybrid pepper.
That top end is just as hot as or hotter than standard pepper spray. Compare it to a typical hottest jalapeno pepper, which averages clocked at 5,000 Scoville Heat Units, and the hottest Carolina Reaper is up to 440x times hotter. That is crazy hot and enough to fire up your fart!!! (lol 😛 8-O)
What is SHU and how it measured?
The Scoville scale is a measurement of the pungency (spiciness or heat) of chili peppers, as recorded in Scoville Heat Units (SHU), based on the concentration of capsaicinoids, among which capsaicin is the main component. Capsaicin is a chemical that makes chili peppers hot. The scale is named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, whose 1912 method is known as the Scoville organoleptic test.
Pungency | SHU |
---|---|
Very highly pungent | Above 80,000 |
Highly pungent | 25,000 to 70,000 |
Moderately pungent | 3,000 to 25,000 |
Mildly pungent | 700 to 3,000 |
Non pungent | 0 to 700 |
